Misuse of fireworks sparks two fires in Longmont

A dumpster fire and a large set of bushes caught on fire.

Two fires broke out in Longmont due to the misuse of fireworks.

On July 5, witnesses reported that  juveniles were throwing fireworks from a car. They threw some in a dumpster located at an apartment complex on Tulip Street, igniting the contents of the dumpster, according to the Longmont Public Safety spokesperson, Robin Ericson.

There were two other calls in the area around the same time for fireworks at Spencer Street and 14th Avenue involving juveniles in a silver sedan, according to police.

Longmont Public safety personnel were able to put the fire out. The fire caused no damage to the dumpster or surrounding property.

Also on July 5, Longmont Department of Public Safety responded to Ponderosa Circle regarding a potential structure fire.

Longmont Fire was first on scene, where they discovered the bushes along the west end of Ponderosa Circle and the sidewalk were fully engulfed in flames. The fire department estimates these flames were about 10’ high, according to Ericson.

It took approximately ten minutes for fire personnel to extinguish the fire.

A witness stated he had heard fireworks throughout the night and went to sleep. He woke up to a “tapping” noise on the window or wall. When he looked out the window he saw “neon orange” and called 911, according to the Longmont Police Department.

A second witness reported hearing a “boom” and also called 911.

The house closest to the fire on Ponderosa Circle had some minor damage including a broken window, house paint bubbled due to the heat, and approximately 30 feet of fully burned bushes.

Approximately 15 feet of fence was burnt in the fire at another home on the opposite side of the sidewalk on Ponderosa Court.

No one was injured in the fires, and Longmont Fire personnel, which include the police and fire department,  were quickly able to get the fires under control.

The police are asking anyone who witnessed or has video of either of these fires to send them to the Police Department at 303-651-8555.
