A 28-year-old man was arrested at 4:24 p.m. on June 27 in Boulder because he was believed by police to be connected to “a series of assaults and threats” reported between June 26 and June 27. The suspect was wielding a large, metal chain.

The City of Boulder said that between 11 a.m. on June 26 and the time of the suspect’s arrest on June 27, seven women and one man were identified as victims of assault by the same person. “In some cases, the suspect reportedly struck victims with the chain; in others, the chain was swung in a threatening manner and hit a vehicle but did not make contact with a person,” the City of Boulder said on Friday. “No serious injuries have been reported and none of the victims were transported by emergency medical services.”

Then, on Monday afternoon, the Boulder Police Department announced that “there were two earlier assaults likely involving the same suspect, bringing the victim count to 10.”

“At approximately 4 a.m. on June 26, a man was transported to the hospital after being assaulted by a man with a chain near Broadway and Arapahoe,” the department said. “Patrol officers responded to the scene and searched for the suspect. They were unable to locate him at that time…. At approximately 7:30 a.m. on June 26, another victim walked into the police department to file a report about his bike being struck by a man with a chain.”

After, beginning at around 11 a.m. on June 26, officers began receiving the additional eight reports about a man assaulting people with a chain near 13th and Canyon.

The suspect, who remains unnamed as the investigation is ongoing, is being charged with the following: Second Degree Assault, Attempted Second Degree Assault, Felony Menacing, and Criminal Mischief.

The Boulder Police Department will continue to investigate this incident, and additional charges may be filed.
