Speeding cars elude police

The reason for the cars' excessive speed is unknown

Officer Garret Hultgren from the Longmont Police Department was patrolling the area around Third Avenue and Martin Street on Tuesday evening when he noticed two vehicles coming through the intersection at a high rate of speed.

The light through the intersection was green when both vehicles made a quick left turn to head northbound on Martin Street.

A white, newer model Ford Fusion sedan was followed by a grey, newer model Infiniti Sedan.

According to Hultgren, both cars cut the corner so they were hugging the inside curb line.

Hultgren attempted to catch up to the vehicles but fell several blocks behind due to their excessive speed.

At the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Martin Street, Hultgren became close enough to see the vehicles’ brake lights illuminate. The white vehicle backed up into the intersection and U-turned to head southbound — an evasive maneuver, Hultgren thought — but was quickly followed by the grey vehicle.

Hultgren turned southbound and flashed his red and blue lights to initiate a traffic stop. His efforts were eluded by the vehicles as they continued along at an accelerated speed.

Both vehicles made another sharp turn off Martin Street to head eastbound on Longs Peak Avenue. Hultgren chased the vehicles until the intersection of Longs Peak Avenue and Lashley Street then discontinued the pursuit.

“I don’t know if the grey car was chasing the white car or if they were speed racing,” Hultgren said, “I don’t know what their intention was with the way they were driving.”

According to Hultgren, the white vehicle was missing a front license plate and the grey vehicle “didn’t look like it had a rear plate.” Hultgren did not have a chance to document any of the vehicles’ license plate numbers in his pursuit.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Longmont Police Department at 303-651-8501. The case number is 21-6367.
