Weld County Sheriff’s Office deputies locate run-away suspect by pinging officer’s cell phone.

Around 1:15 a.m. Weld County Sheriff’s Office deputies were notified of a suspicious person at a storage lot in the 9100 block of Weld County Road 2.

After arrival, the deputies discovered a white 2000 Chevy pickup truck and its owner. While performing a traffic stop the officers asked for the man’s name, to which he replied with his brother’s name.

The officers were able to bring up a mugshot of the man on the officer’s cell phone and matched identifying tattoos to confirm the man had given a false name.

One of the officers, while trying to get the suspect out of the vehicle, placed his cell phone on the rail of the truck’s bed. Instead of getting out of the vehicle, the man fled the scene, crashing into a security gate as he went, according to a report from the Weld County Sheriff’s office.

Moments later, the officer realized his cell phone was missing and attempted to locate it using the “Find My iPhone” app, with the help of a fellow officer.

Together, the officers were able to locate the phone. They discovered that the phone was headed west toward Boulder. Around 2:47 a.m. the phone stopped in the 4800 block of Jay Road in Boulder.

Weld County deputies contacted the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office for assistance. Boulder County deputies were able to arrest the man at the Boulder address and turn him over to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office to be placed in the Weld County Jail.

The man remains in custody on a $23,000 bond and is charged with several felony charges including criminal impersonation, criminal mischief, an attempt to influence a public servant and eluding. He was also charged with the misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest, driving on a revoked license, driving without insurance and the possession of a Schedule 2 controlled substance.

During the process, officers also discovered that the man had two active misdemeanor warrants for flight to avoid prosecution and failure to appear in court and a felony charge of attempting to introduce contraband into the jail during booking.
