Sierra Club Endorses Foote in Boulder County D.A. Race

The following is a press release from Mike Foote and is published by the Longmont Observer as a public service.

A local chapter of the largest environmental advocacy group in the nation has made a rare endorsement in a District Attorney's race. The Indian Peaks Group of The Sierra Club, an organization whose nationwide membership totals over three million, has endorsed Rep. Mike Foote for Boulder County District Attorney.

"I'm honored by the Sierra Club's support," Foote said. "In their more than 125-year history they've stood at the front lines of environmental protection. I'm excited to bring that fight to the Boulder District Attorney's office."

Foote, who became known as a champion for environmental protection and a fighter against oil and gas during his six years representing Eastern Boulder County in the state legislature, has made the issue a key piece of his platform in his campaign for District Attorney.

"During my fourteen years as a prosecutor in the Boulder D.A.'s office environmental crimes has just not been a priority," Foote said. "I intend to change that. Local law enforcement can and should play a role in protecting our environment."

Since announcing his candidacy in February, Foote has spoken with thousands of voters about his plan to protect Boulder County's environment as District Attorney.  He has committed to prosecuting oil and gas related environmental crimes if they occur in Boulder County.

"The Firestone tragedy of last year showed us that we can't be passive on this issue," Foote said. "We have to lean into the fight and be prepared to prosecute environmental crimes."

The Sierra Club's decision to endorse Foote is a rare one and speaks to Foote's record of environmental protection and his vision for prosecuting environmental crimes as District Attorney.

"Mike Foote has been a tremendous champion for the environment as a legislator," Indian Peaks Group Conservation Chair Kirk Cunningham said. "He's brought that passion into the race for Boulder County District Attorney. Mike has new ideas for how the Boulder County D.A.'s office can take an active role in environmental protection, including continuing to fight fracking and oil and gas development."

The Indian Peaks Group, or IPG, is effective and influential in Boulder County on issues that affect the environment. Karen Dike, a Longmont resident, sits on the group's executive committee.

"The Sierra Club rarely endorses candidates in District Attorney's races, but Mike's record on the issue and his bold vision for the future makes this choice abundantly clear for us," Dike said. "Mike Foote is the best choice to protect Boulder County's environment."
