A driver suspected of stealing a vehicle fled the scene of a traffic stop in Weld County and caused a head-on collision that caused three fatalities. Around 3 p.m. on April 30, a Weld County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputy pulled over a GMC Yukon on Highway 85 near Highway 60. When the officer initiated the traffic stop, the driver pulled over. As the officer walked up to the vehicle, the driver fled the scene at a high rate of speed.
The WCSO press release states that “details are limited at this time,” but the suspect veered into oncoming traffic while trying to evade the deputy. It crashed into a motorist who was uninvolved with the original traffic stop. The Yukon struck the other motorist in a head-on collision. The driver of the Yukon and another passenger were pronounced dead on the scene. The other motorist involved in the crash was also pronounced dead.
“The Sheriff’s Office extends our condolences to the victims of this terrible incident that resulted from the actions of the suspect,” the media report stated. “We ask for the patience of our community, and everyone involved while we conduct our internal investigation. This is an active, on-going investigation, and because of that, information is changing and evolving, and we have no other details to share at this time.”
In a separate incident on April 16, the WCSO arrested a suspect for reckless driving and vehicular eluding. The suspect was released the same day on cash bond.
