In 2020, Longmont City Council asked city of Longmont staff to begin working on recommendations included in the Longmont's 2020 Climate Action Recommendations Report to reach the city's goal of being carbon-free by 2030.

One recommendation in the report includes forming an electrification committee, which will guide "Longmont’s approach to community-wide beneficial building
electrification," states a news release from Longmont Power and Communication.

Beneficial building electrification refers to "replacing fossil fuel use with electricity in a way that can lower carbon emissions, reduce energy use and costs, and be equitably and economically deployed across the community," the release states.

Longmont is looking for two at-large community members to join the committee. The community members' roles will help the committee "to look at ways to help the city’s homeowners and businesses move away from fossil fuels in a thoughtful manner that benefits the entire community," the release states.

The committee will be made up of key stakeholders, city staff, two city council liaisons and two community members and will meet every six to eight weeks for two years. Meetings will be begin virtually and times will be chosen by the committee, once established.

“Longmont continues to press for greater energy sustainability,” said LPC executive director David Hornbacher. “Today, half of our city’s electricity comes from carbon-free sources. Working on practical options for our community’s buildings to shift to that ever-cleaner electricity is yet one more way to build a better Longmont for all our residents. We appreciate the volunteers who want to be part of this work in creating a path forward and helping us achieve our climate goals.”

Applications open on May 1 and must be returned by May 15 to be considered.
