The Longmont Public Library is hosting Helen Thorpe, author of The Newcomers as a part of their Authors We Love series.
The event will take place on Monday, September 17, at 7 p.m., at the Longmont Museum, located at 400 Quail Road, Longmont. Tickets for the event are free and available on Friday, August 24 at 9 p.m.
According to a press release from the Longmont Public Library, "Registration is required for this program and can be accomplished in person at the 2nd Floor Information Desk in the library and online at http://bit.ly/AuthorsWeLove. Ticket reservations are limited to six tickets per party. No telephone ticket reservations will be accepted. Telephone messages left requesting ticket reservations will not be accepted."
The Longmont Museum auditorium doors will open at 6 p.m. on September 17 to allow for first-come, first-served seating. An open bar will be available at the event.
"Those with registrations must check-in by 6:45 pm on the evening of the program or forfeit their seats to those on standby. Some standby seats may be available. Standby attendees can collect a standby number when the doors open at 6 pm and will be seated after 6:45 pm. These will be last minute seatings and the library cannot guarantee that all those given numbers will receive seats or that parties will be seated together," states the library press release.
Helen Thorpe lives in Denver, CO and is an author and a journalist. She was born in London to Irish parents and attended Princeton and Columbia Universities. During her marriage to John Hickenlooper, Ms. Thorpe served as the First Lady of Denver (2003-2011) and the First Lady of Colorado (2011-2015).
Thorpe has been a staff writer for the New York Observer, The New Yorker, 5280 Magazine and Texas Monthly and a freelance writer for New York Times Magazine, Slate, and other publications. She has written three books, The Newcomers being her third. Her other books include Just Like Us: The True Story of Four Mexican Girls Coming of Age in America and Soldier Girls: The Battles of Three Women at Home and at War.
"In The Newcomers: Finding Refuge, Friendship, and Hope in an American Classroom, Helen Thorpe’s intensive, year-long reporting puts a human face on these debates—or rather, the faces of 22 newly-arrived teenagers taking a beginner-level English Language Acquisition class at South High School in Denver," states the press release.
According to the press release, Thorpe will be selling and signing copies of her books.
