Boulder County car thefts down through first half of 2023

Numbers still high statewide compared to pre-pandemic years

Halfway through 2023, motor vehicle thefts in Boulder County are down compared to the same time last year.

According to the live data feed on motor vehicle thefts in Colorado, managed by the state’s Auto Theft Prevention Authority, there have been 388 car thefts in Boulder County through July 1. That gives the county the eighth highest number of stolen vehicles this year out of Colorado’s 64 counties.

This time last year, there had already been 499 motor vehicle thefts in Boulder County. The decrease in number of thefts follows state trends, which saw 21,750 thefts through the first six months of 2022 compared to 17,095 in the same time period this year.

Of the cars stolen in Boulder County this year, 246 have been recovered, according to the state data.

Denver has by far the highest number of thefts per county in the state with over 5,000 so far this year. The second most thefts have been in Arapahoe County with 2,811.

While statewide car theft numbers are down compared to 2022, it should be noted that 2022 was a record breaking year for car thefts in the state with a total of 41,469 vehicles stolen. The state saw record numbers in 2021 and 2020 as well.

According to preliminary data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, Colorado had the fifth highest number of vehicle thefts in the country in 2022.
