Residents who want to lead hikes and talk about ecology are invited to enroll in a 10-week training class to become volunteer naturalists with Boulder County Parks & Open Space.

The county is taking applications for 2022 volunteer naturalist training class with the application deadline set for Nov. 7, 2021. Training classes begin Friday, Jan. 7, 2022.

Volunteer naturalists help Boulder County Parks & Open Space by leading hikes, presenting slide programs, and providing hands-on experiences to people of all ages, according to a Boulder County news release.

Boulder County is especially looking for people interested in working with school groups, both on trails and in the classroom. Topics range from wildlife and plants to ecology and geology, the news release states. As part of the training, volunteers learn about interpretive techniques to connect with audiences, the news release states.

  • Volunteer naturalists must be at least 18 years old, pass a background check and an interview and participate in the 10-week training class. Applicants also must have ongoing weekday availability and commit to helping lead at least six programs in 2022, the news release states.
  • Previous experience is not necessary.
  • Training classes take place on Fridays, Jan. 7 through March 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Longmont.
