A new online reporting system has been rolled out by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office for non-emergency and non-violent crime reports. According to the BCSO records office, there were 1,379 reports in 2024 that could meet the criteria for online reporting. Each report took an average of 95 minutes of deputy time. The records department estimates the new reporting system could save 2,176 hours per year or approximately 1.33 deputy years.
The public can report misdemeanor or petty theft, fraud or identity theft, criminal mischief, third degree criminal trespass, trespass to a vehicle, lost or found property, and similar incidents. Insurance companies typically require police reports and the new system will make it easier for the public to file these reports to obtain a case number.
“It's going to free up officers to have more availability to be on the street to deal with calls,” BCSO Public Information Officer Vinnie Montez said. “A lot of agencies are short [around the country]. We're trying to do our best to utilize the resources that we do have, in the most efficient manner possible.”
BCSO personnel will review the information submitted via the online reporting system and the service is primarily for the convenience of residents who need to obtain a case number for their insurance providers. Further follow-up is usually not required, but an investigator will make contact if further information is needed. The public should contact 911 for emergency situations or to report violent crimes.
