The Boulder County Youth Corps is facing a backlog of projects after being on a two-year COVID-19 forced hiatus and new Youth Corps Program Manager Luiz Blanco-Bertolo could not be happier.
“There should be no shortage of work,” Blanco-Bertolo said this week. “A lot of county open space properties were heavily used during the pandemic so we will be doing a lot of cleaning and rebuilding.”
Blanco-Bertolo was hired last year to head up the Youth Corps just before the new season was canceled because of COVID restrictions. This year, widely available vaccines have led to most restrictions being lifted allowing the program to get back track, he said.
“Most of our work is done out of doors and we will take other precautions,” Blanco-Bertolo said. “It will seem like a normal year.”
“We just need the workers,” he added.
All Boulder County residents ages 14-17 have until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, to apply for summer jobs with the youth corps. Blanc-Bertolo said the program is looking to attract at least 100 workers.
Teams will work 30 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, from June 13 to Aug. 3. They will work on a variety of conservation and stewardship projects including trail construction and maintenance, historic preservation, forest thinning, construction and repair of fencing, landscaping and removal of noxious weeds, according to a Boulder County news release.
Corps Members must be Boulder County residents between the ages of 14-17 as of the first day of work (June 13) and they will start at $12.56 an hour, the news release states.
Boulder County is also hiring adults to be team leaders. Applications for those positions will be posted soon. Assistant Team Leaders must be 18 or older and will start at $17.70 per hour. Team leaders must be 21 or older and will start at $19.70 per hour.
Kids and adults can look forward to full days of hard work. “But they will also have a meaningful impact on their community,” Blanco-Bertolo said. “It will be a formative experience.”
