Breaking news: shots fired after investigating stolen vehicle

A located stolen vehicle led to a fleeing suspect this afternoon near the 600 block of Baker Street.

The unmarked Longmont Police pickup truck was shot by a suspect during an attempt to flee arrest this afternoon.

Longmont Police were called to investigate a stolen vehicle and the incident ended with shots being fired. 

Police responded to the 600 block of Baker St. When they arrived they discovered four people within the stolen car. A man ran from the car when officers arrived. 

Police set up a perimeter to search for the man, causing Columbine Elementary School to go on temporary lockdown earlier today. 

The suspect fired several shots at police after he was located running northbound on Longs Peak Avenue, according to a statement released by police.

In the 100 block of Longs Peak Ave. a second officer approached the suspect in an unmarked vehicle and flashed his emergency lights. The suspect turned fire on the second officer hitting the hood of the police vehicle, the report states.

Officers did not return fire, however, the second officer struck the suspect with his vehicle, according to the police statement. 

The suspect's injuries were treated by a Longmont CORE paramedic immediately after being arrested. The man was taken to a nearby hospital via ambulance for treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.

The suspect's weapon was found at the scene.

An investigation is being conducted by the Boulder County Investigations Team for the 20th Judicial District to determine if the actions taken by officers were warranted. 

The officer driving the vehicle which struck the suspect has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
