A 31-year-old man is facing an attempted second-degree murder charge after he allegedly shot at the driver of a car he was riding in near the 600 E. Mountain View Avenue early Saturday morning.

Julio Quintana also faces a charge each of first-degree assault and possession of a weapon by a previous offender. Quintana is in Boulder County Jail on $500,000 bond.

A formal filing of charges is scheduled for today. According to an arrest affidavit, Quintana has prior convictions for menacing, domestic violence and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Quintana was the passenger in a vehicle with several other people after a night of drinking in Denver about 2 a.m. Saturday, the affidavit states. A deputy tried to pull the driver over after noticing his erratic driving but the driver did not stop.

A passenger in the car threatened to shoot the driver unless he stopped. When the driver did not stop, Quintana allegedly took the gun and fired one shot through the windshield in the area of 600 E. Mountain View Ave.,the affidavit states.

The driver pulled the car over and got out and ran. Quintana fired four to five more shots at the driver, hitting him once in the face, police said. The man suffered “serious bodily injuries” and was transported to a hospital but he survived, the affidavit said.

The other shots went into nearby homes but there were no reported injuries.
