On the third Monday in January, Americans celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The day became a holiday in 1983 when Former President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill into law.

For many, the national holiday is a day to give back to their community. For others, it is a day to remember King’s legacy.

This year those in the area are invited to attend two Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations. Both events will feature keynote speaker Dr. Reiland Rabaka, founder/director of the Center for African and African-American Studies at the University of Colorado-Boulder and music by Purnell Steen and the Five Points Ambassadors of Denver.

The events will also include music, dancing and the spoken word celebrating King’s dream.

The first event will take place on Jan. 14 at 3 p.m. at the Boulder Jewish Community Center, located at 6007 Oreg Ave. in Boulder. The event is free but registration is required

The second event is on Jan. 15, at 10 a.m. at Silver Creek High School at 4901 Nelson Rd. A youth activity will begin before the event at 9 a.m. in the school’s cafeteria. This event is also free but registration is required.
