Longmont Animal Control responded to a call for a bear in a resident’s backyard at 9:30 a.m. on July 10 in the area of Hover Street and Third Avenue, according to Rogelio Mares, the City of Longmont’s public information officer.

“Colorado Parks and Wildlife was notified and was out on location, they are monitoring the bear,” Mares said in an email at 11:48 a.m. Thursday, adding that the incident occurred in a “quiet part of town.”

Colorado Parks and Wildlife Northeast Region Public Information Officer Kara Van Hoose said it is a black bear, which can be many colors and is the only species of bear in Colorado. The bear was located up a cottonwood tree when the officers responded.

“Our wildlife officers responded to the scene this morning. The bear is up too high and staying put,” Van Hoose said in an email at 2:17 p.m. on Thursday. “We will continue to monitor the bear's location. This particular bear was in almost the exact same spot at this time last year, so it has found food around here before.”

Van Hoose said it is crucial that people remove trash, bird feeders, outdoor pet food and other types of unnatural food sources for bears.

Photos circulating on social media appear to show the bear in a treehouse.

“Overall, bear activity has been pretty busy and normal in Boulder County. Bears will be less active during the day to rest,” Van Hoose said. “If they are up in a tree (like this one), they usually do not come down until activity on the ground has subsided.”
