Longmont Library patrons 16 or older who want to spring a “Fool’s Mate” or the classic “Dutch Defense” on an opponent can do so every Tuesday night from 6-7:30 p.m., starting Dec. 7.

The library will be hosting Open Chess Night on the second floor of the facility, 409 Fourth Ave., according to a city of Longmont news release.

Tables will be set up starting at 6 p.m. and games will need to complete by 8 p.m. for the closing of the library, the news release states. Those 16 and younger can participate in the games; however, an adult must always be with them.

No instruction will be provided. But the news release points out that the library has books on the subject should anyone want to learn how to play including:

There are also online resources including a 3-D illustrated PDF showing move-by-move instructions or “Chess for Beginners” magazine. Both are found on Overdrive, an online catalog Longmont Library cardholders can access, the news release states.

No registration is required to attend the chess nights and the public is welcome to attend.
