The city of Longmont will begin spraying for mosquitos after three Longmont locations tested positive this week for the West Nile Virus.
Traps located at Jim Hamm Park (17 Avenue and Weld County Road 1), the area around Renaissance and Meadow View (Airport Road and Buckthorn Drive), and Izaak Walton Park (First Avenue and Sunset Street) held high numbers of the Culex mosquito and tested positive for West Nile Virus.
Culex mosquitoes are considered primary carries for the virus. The city reported 10,773 mosquitos were trapped this week which is up from 7,138 the previous week.
The Culex mosquitoes made up 57.3% of the mosquitos trapped at Izaak Walton Pond, according to Dan Wolford, city of Longmont land program manager.
Spraying will begin on Thursday between 9-11 p.m., weather permitting.
