Longmont City Council got its first glimpse of the city’s proposed 2022 operating budget which  totals an estimated $389.55 million, a 4.56% increase over last year.

The city’s proposed $101.94 million general fund budget is a 14.6% increase from 2021, City Manager Harold Dominiguez told the city council during a Tuesday night study session.

The 2022 budget calls for the creation of 30 new positions, including a social equity coordinator, an additional counselor for senior services and a bilingual outreach coordinator for the library, Dominguez said.

Longmont also hopes to add an ombudsman to help with the development community and two new rangers for the city’s Parks, Open Space and Trails, Dominguez said. “The rangers will help handle the increased capacity in our open space and greenway properties,” he said.

More detailed information on the proposed budget as well as the budget for the city’s Capital Improvement Programs will be rolled out during council meetings in September, according to a city staff report.

Public hearings on the budget and the CIP are scheduled for September 23 and October 5. The budget adoption and appropriations ordinances are scheduled for first reading on October 12 and second reading on October 26, according to the city report.
