City Council Tuesday will discuss proposed gun control ordinances in an executive session that follows a study session at 7 p.m.

The executive session was requested by City Manager Harold Dominguez and Mayor Joan Peck. Councilors in June talked about proposed gun control measures that drew a huge crowd in city council chambers of mostly critics.

The proposed measures include:

  • Banning the open carrying of weapons in the city.
  • Enforcing a 10-day waiting period after the purchase of a firearm.
  • Being 21-years-of-age before the purchase of any firearm.
  • Prohibiting the sale of unserialized firearms or “ghost guns.”
  • Signage on buildings reminding people about an open carry ban.

Gun rights groups have also filed suit against the Boulder County Commissioners over its gun measures..

U.S District Judge Charlotte Sweeney issued a temporary restraining order in late August to block Boulder County from enforcing one of the five gun control ordinances county commissioners approved Aug. 2.

Sweeney’s ruling took aim at the ordinance related to the prohibition banning the sale, transfer and manufacturing of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in unincorporated Boulder County.

The temporary restraining order will be in effect for 14 days and a hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 8.
