Low-income students would get more access to the internet should the Longmont City Council this week approve two agreements for the construction of a wireless network.
The council Tuesday night will consider two intergovernmental agreements and a lease between the city and the St. Vrain Valley School District to bring more of the internet to local students, said a city report.
The council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Meetings are now in-person.
The first IGA revolves around a grant awarded to the school district in February 2021 for $1.3 million through the Connecting Colorado Schools Grant Program by the Colorado Department of Education, the staff report said.
The second IGA relates to a grant the district received from the state education department in December 2020, for $150,000 to provide wireless internet to the Community Center in Del Camino at the River Valley Village mobile home park, the staff report said.
The focus of the grant is to provide wireless access to students in and around Longmont that qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Lunch program currently offered by the school district. A subcontractor will place wireless equipment at 6-7 different locations across the city to serve those who currently can’t get affordable internet, the staff report states.
The work includes building, maintaining and operating the wireless infrastructure for at least 20 years, or until “technological advancements render the infrastructure inadequate, whichever is sooner,” the staff report states.
