Longmont City Council Monday night will consider purchasing the 130-acre Adam Farm, located southeast of Union Reservoir and west of St. Vrain State Park. The acquisition would include six shares from the Oligarchy Ditch Company and cost $5.5 million.

If the council approves the purchase, Boulder County will acquire a conservation easement over the property from the city of $2 million, according to a staff report to the city council. This reduces the total cost to the city to $3.5 million.

Council is meeting in a special 7 p.m. session Monday night as the regular council meetings for Dec. 21, Dec. 22 and Jan. 4 are canceled for the holidays, said Assistant City Manager Sandy Seader.

The city began negotiating for the Adam Farm in 2019 for open space property, according to the staff report.

By buying the property, the city will protect 85 acres of prime agricultural land and preserve .65 miles of the St. Vrain Creek corridor and nearly .25 of a mile of Liberty Gulch, the staff report states.

The city will also be able to develop a trail system between Union Reservoir, St. Vrain State Park and the St. Vrain Greenway. “It’s location also helps define and shape our community by limiting development and community buffer,” the staff report states.
