On July 1, the City of Boulder announced that it had launched a new website that features live video streams from eight different Boulder open space areas, providing potential visitors and hikers to those areas with information about parking and weather before they get to the trailhead. These camera feeds, according to the city, offer people a “convenient way to ‘know before they go,’ helping them better plan their visits, avoid crowded areas and consider alternate transportation options.”

Locations of the cameras include the Chautauqua Meadow, Flagstaff Mountain, Wonderland Lake and trailheads south of the city. The cameras were installed in “high-use areas where feasible, based on available power and infrastructure,” according to the city. Additional cameras will be installed in the coming months.

Some of the live video streams are targeted mainly for scenic views, as well: the camera based at the Chautauqua Ranger Cottage shows real-time footage the Boulder Flatirons.

The city warned that the camera feed may be “suspended or interrupted at any time” in the event of severe weather, technical difficulties, or “operational priorities.” In the case of an outage, the city said that service will be restored to the cameras as staff resources allow.
