Golden Ponds Repairs to Begin in Late March

A spillway and pedestrian bridge in the easternmost pond, which washed out in 2013's severe flooding, are being replaced and the

surrounding trail rebuilt.

Replacement of the Golden Ponds spillway and the bridge that once allowed pedestrians to cross it in the easternmost pond at Golden Ponds Nature Area is anticipated to begin in late March. The spillway and bridge washed out in the severe flooding that Longmont experienced in 2013.

The spillway is a concrete structure that releases excess water from the pond into St. Vrain Creek. The work will include installing a new concrete spillway and pedestrian bridge crossing with handrails. A portion of trail around this pond that has been closed since the flood will also be rebuilt and reopened.

Completion time for the project is estimated at between 2-3 months, with delays possible depending on spring runoff levels.

The project will cost approximately $700,000 to complete, with a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) expected to cover 75 percent of the cost. The City of Longmont and the State of Colorado will split the remaining project costs.

The spillway replacement is being undertaken now due to availability and timing of the FEMA grant. Previously, the replacement was intended to be coordinated with work in the area on Resilient St. Vrain, Longmont’s extensive, multi-year project to fully restore the St. Vrain Greenway trail and improve the St. Vrain Creek channel to protect

people and property from future flooding. The phase of the Resilient St. Vrain project that includes the Golden Ponds area is currently seeking funding and does not yet have a projected start date.
