Less than three months after announcing her intent to run for Boulder County Commissioner, District 3, Elaina Shively of Lafayette has confirmed that she has qualified for the primary ballot via petition, according to a news release from her campaign..

The 37-year-old Shively is running as a Democrat and hopes to replace incumbent Matt Jones who is retiring as commissioner after completing his 2022 term. Shively is currently Director of Diversion and Restorative Justice in the Boulder District Attorney’s Office.

After collecting petition signatures for weeks, the Boulder County Clerk and Recorder’s office confirmed to Shively’s campaign on March 15 that she had secured enough verified signatures to qualify, the news release states.

“Petitioning on the ballot took a lot of time, energy, and a team of volunteers, but it was entirely worth it,” Shively said in her news release. “Not only did we collect enough signatures, but it gave me the chance to connect with so many Boulder County voters about the issues that really matter to them.”

The campaign used 46 volunteer petition carriers to collect signatures throughout Boulder County. They submitted over 1,900 signatures with 1,442 being confirmed by the Clerk’s office, the news release states. The minimum number to qualify for the primary ballot is 1,000.

“I want to thank our volunteer team who stuck with it through a little bit of everything, including a February snow storm, to ensure we got the signatures needed,” Shively said.

Shively graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with both her undergraduate and law degrees, according to her campaign news release. She served as a public defender in Adams County before starting with the Boulder DA’s office in 2015 to work on innovative criminal justice reform initiatives, her campaign states.
