Devout Christians carried a cross from St. Francis of Assisi Church to St. John the Baptist Church in commemoration of Good Friday.
Good Friday is observed two days before Easter Sunday. It is commemorated as the day Jesus Christ died on the cross.
"It's not just the commemoration of Christ's passion for the sake of focusing on the agony of it all, but the agony has a purpose. That's God's gift of redemption to the world, which finds fulfillment in the resurrection," Gabriel Radle, assistant professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, told USA TODAY.
The procession in Longmont happens each year on Good Friday. Usually, it begins at St. Johns and makes its way to St. Francis, however, participants reversed the route this year.
Around 100 people of faith walked down Airport Road around 8:30 a.m. on Friday, stopping along the way to hold prayer. They also took turns carrying a large cross.
“Anyone is welcome to join us,” Maryel Adams, a participant in the walk stated. “It’s community-based… to commemorate our Lord’s passion.”
