The City Council appears ready to approve an extension on the $5 surcharge on every speeding ticket issued in Longmont.
The surcharge is for the Traffic Safety Fund — originally established in 2014 — which is used to help fund education, enforcement and equipment to bolster traffic safety in Longmont, a city staff report states.
The TSF underwrites a Traffic Safety Coordinator in half-time position that regularly leads safety rides for Longmont-area bicyclists, the report states. The fund also helped purchase bicycle helmets for vulnerable populations, bicycle lights and bells and other safety equipment for walking and bicycling in Longmont, the report states.
The TSF has been used to pay overtime for police officers doing focused patrols in neighborhoods with higher than typical traffic concerns, the report said.
In 2020, $12,924 was collected through the TSF and the city spent $14,682, according to the staff report.
The council unanimously approved the TSF program Tuesday night and scheduled a public hearing for May 10.
