The Longmont City Council Tuesday night will go over plans to redevelop the abandoned Great Western Sugar Mill site and begin an arts and technology center in southeast Longmont.
City planners are partnering with a qualified consultant team, led by Stantec, and preliminary information will be presented to the council during its regular 7 p.m. session.
The push to transform the Sugar Mill and begin a Science, Technology, Education and Arts complex (or S.T.E.A.M.) hub on 250 acres in southeast Longmont is based on previous community planning efforts, a city staff report states.
The project will focus on:
- Land Use (mix of housing, commercial, community and other uses)
- Urban Design (architecture and character)
- Transportation (including bike and pedestrian connections)
- Storm Drainage and Sustainability Infrastructure
The council is not expected to vote on any proposal but give direction to city staff members.
The project team will talk to property owners, area developers and the community who live near the proposed developments over the next several months. The team is expected to present findings and additional information to the Longmont City Council later this year, the staff report states.
