Longmont City Council member Marcia Martin urged residents, Tuesday night, to read the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, which warns climate change is rapidly overtaking the planet.

The report, released Monday, said many of the changes in the climate are “unprecedented in thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of years, and some of the changes already set in motion — such as continued sea level rise — are irreversible over hundreds of thousands of years,” according to a IPCC news release.

The report points out that strong and sustained reductions in emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases would limit climate change, the news release states.

Martin told the city council that the report is “grave.” She added that she hoped reading the report will “impact everyone’s personal policy and household policy and political policies.”

Reversing climate change is now not just reserved for our grandchildren, Martin said, “this is for us and we have to take action now.”
