Boulder County wants to update its regulations dealing with the local marijuana industry.
A public hearing is scheduled for Thursday, July 29 at 1 p.m. before the Boulder County Commissioners to discuss land use code amendments and to align county codes with state regulations for pot operations, according to a Boulder County news release.
The meeting will be held virtually and residents can register either to participate or attend.
The public can also provide input on the proposed changes to the regulations by emailing [email protected] or by calling 720-798-3601. Residents can also learn more by going to the DC-20-0001 webpage.
Boulder County enacted its first set of medical marijuana regulations in 2010, according to the news release. In a 2014 update to the Land Use Code, recreational marijuana was also included. In 2016, additional updates were made to address the cultivation and processing of marijuana.
Boulder County has updated the code to address regulations that have evolved at the state level to keep local regulations up to date, the news release said. The county also wants to regulate marijuana to serve both the general public and the industry, states the news release.
The impetus behind the most recent code update, was a change in 2017 to Colorado’s state regulations regarding marijuana. County staff members also clarified existing Code language and to engage with industry representatives, the community, and staff, to identify other potential issues that needed to be addressed, the news release states.
The proposed changes include adding a definition for marijuana store, adding the word “regulations” after “marijuana establishments,” specifying that marijuana extraction is allowed as a light and general industrial use versus other types of extraction, and specifying what qualifies as an ancillary educational facility, according to a Boulder County website.
