On August 17, students all over the St. Vrain Valley School district will return to in-person learning, some with backpacks full of school supplies donated by the St. Vrain Valley Education Foundation’s, or SVVEF, Crayons to Calculators program.

Each year the program raises money to supply over 11,000 students, from SVVSD and Boulder Valley school districts with the supplies they need to have a successful school year.

Families spend an average of $75 for school supplies each year per student, according to the SVVEF website

In past years, the program asked for donations of school supplies along with extra support from the community to assemble the backpacks, according to the website. Due to lingering uncertainties concerning the COVID-19 pandemic, the program will once again accept monetary donations either online or via check mailed to the organization. Checks can be mailed to Impact on Education ℅ Crayon for Calculators, 721 Front St. Ste. A, Louisville, CO 80027.

To help lift the burden to families in need, the Crayons to Calculators program will launch its Community Challenge on Thursday in hopes of raising $25,000.

Donations can be made by organizations, individuals and businesses, the website states.

Students or parents seeking supplies should contact the student’s school to learn more about how to get a backpack, the website states. Once assembled, backpacks will be delivered to the student’s local schools in early August for distribution.
