NEWS RELEASE
BOULDER COUNTY
*************************
Sugarloaf Road will be closed between CO 119/Boulder Canyon and Betasso Road during the following times starting this Friday, Aug. 12:
- Monday through Friday – 9:30 a.m. to noon
- Monday through Friday – 1 to 3:30 p.m.
Sugarloaf Road will remain open in a single-lane configuration during all other hours. When open, expect flaggers during daytime working hours and the use of traffic signals outside of working hours. The daytime, weekday road closures will be in place through Friday, Sept. 9, weather permitting. The west end of Sugarloaf at CO 72 will remain open at all times.
The 20-days of closures are necessary to safely complete the retaining walls that will support the road. During excavation for the first wall, crews found that the uphill travel lane was becoming unstable, so it was removed for safety leaving one viable lane remaining. The contractor had planned on using this lane to complete construction of the new retaining walls, but, since it is no longer available, they will need to use the remaining lane for construction activity. Instead of having numerous 20-minute full roadway closures throughout the day to complete the remaining work, crews will close the road for two 2.5-hour increments. This closure will greatly expedite the work needed to complete the walls.
Sugarloaf Fire and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office have been made aware of this situation and are prepared to respond, if needed. Emergency crews will have immediate access at all times and the roadway will be cleared should area evacuation be necessary. Should weather, supply issues, or equipment problems interrupt daily operations, the roadway will be opened to a single lane.
