Former city council member Sean McCoy has declared his candidacy to run in a special election this year to fill the council seat left vacant by Mayor Joan Peck. Peck left the seat to successfully run for mayor in November.
No other candidates have stepped forward to run for the council seat and no official date has been set for the election, said City Clerk Dawn Quintana. City Council members in December agreed April 5 is the earliest the city could hold the election.
“Council has called for an election to fill the vacant at-large seat, but a date has not yet been set as we are in the process of determining how we might run an election outside of one coordinated with the county in November,” Quintana said in an email.
“Sean McCoy has declared he will run and has filed a Candidate Affidavit — but we don’t technically have an election date as of yet,” she said.
The city has issued a Request for Proposals to find an outside vendor to conduct the election.
Quintana told the council in December that an outside vendor would likely cost the city $240,000 to run the election. Still, council members agreed that the city shouldn’t wait until the general election in November 2022 to fill the seat.
County clerks in Boulder and Weld counties cannot conduct the special election before November 2022 because they will be too busy implementing redistricting changes in time for June primary elections, Quintana told the council.
“Stay tuned as we are working just as fast and furious as we can to get things figured out,” Quintana said. “Everyone has questions!”
