PRESS RELEASE: Beginning June 30, the City of Longmont will temporarily close off the sledding hill area at Dry Creek Park. As part of the Resilient St. Vrain Project, soil will be relocated to Izaak Walton Nature Area to help protect Longmont from future flooding. The sledding hill area will be fenced off through April 2026 to allow for safe and efficient work.

This project involves removing dirt from the sledding hill—chosen for its high clay content—and transporting it to nearby Izaak Walton Nature Area, where it will be used to help construct a new levee. The new levee is a key component of the City’s ongoing efforts to better protect people, property, and infrastructure from future flooding along the St. Vrain Creek.

In return, soil from the Izaak Walton Nature Area will be moved to Dry Creek Park and used to rebuild the sledding hill in the same location. This “dirt swap” will significantly reduce project costs and construction time, offering an efficient and environmentally responsible solution for both locations.

What to Expect at Dry Creek Park:

  • Dirt hauling will occur sporadically Monday–Friday, 7 am to 5 pm, through April 2026

  • One or more disc golf holes may be temporarily removed or relocated

  • The new turf fields on the north side of the park will not be affected
