For a fourth consecutive year, the Longmont community will come together to celebrate Juneteenth on Saturday, June 21 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Roosevelt Park. The celebration is free to attend and will feature food merchants, live entertainment, and local vendors.
Juneteenth is a national holiday that commemorates the end of slavery and the Emancipation Proclamation, celebrated annually on June 19. Juneteenth became a national holiday in 2021 but celebrations have dates back to 1866.
“Juneteenth marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrates the rich heritage, resilience, and ongoing contributions of Black communities,” the Longmont Juneteenth celebration website states. “It’s a day to stand together, honor the past, Black resilience and build a future rooted in justice and unity. This will be a vibrant celebration of culture, freedom, and courageous beginnings. Join us for an inspiring day filled with delicious food, captivating live entertainment, special guests, and the warmth of community spirit. Let’s uplift Black voices, celebrate Black excellence, and stand together for progress.”
The celebration has hosted hundreds of community members each year since the celebration was established in 2022. This year’s planning committee includes Shiquita Yarbrough, Jenefer Donovan, and Kimberlee McKee. The event will occur rain or shine.
“The event includes musical and fashion entertainment, vendor and information booths, activities for kids, drum line performances from local high schools, and tons of great food,” the website states.
Lists of featured vendors and entertainers at the celebration are available on the event’s website.
