Food, culture and … breakdancing

Cinco de Mayo is around the corner and the Longmont community can expect a variety of food, interactive activities and high-spirited dancing. BreakEFX Crew is bringing the energetic hip-hop world to the Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 6.

Breakdancing originated in New York City and spread from culture to culture through time. In the 80s, lowrider culture became prominent and breakdancing within the Mexican community was popularized. Founded in 2006, the predominately Mexican-American group, BreakEFX Crew created an accessible take on breakdancing.

“It’s important to offer anyone an outlet to our world where we’re able to offer low-income families, or even families that have no money for dance, and give the kids an outlet to express themselves through movement,”  said Crew Member Tobias Lopez.

BreakEFX hosts the Mexican Standoff, an annual event at the Cinco de Mayo celebration. In its fifth year, the standoff consists of youth and adult competitions with cash prizes and a trip to a breakdancing competition in Atlanta. Apart from the prizes, the crew hopes to inspire confidence and appreciation for the Mexican culture, said Crew Member Eppie Deleon.

“It’s not about how good you are. It’s about your love for dance. It takes a lot of confidence to even get up there,” Deleon said.

Breakdancing is one of the many forms of dance lined up to perform at the event. Tlaloc will perform an Aztec dance in traditional costumes and Grupo Florklorico Mexico Lindo will perform a lively dance in vibrant dresses. Each group represents a different sector of Mexican culture.

“Dance is important in all cultures. All cultures recognize that it brings joy,” said Louie Lopez, event co-chair.
