In November, four seats on the Longmont City Council will be up for election.
The seats of incumbent Mayor Joan Peck and incumbent councilmembers Tim Waters representing Ward One, Susie Hidalgo-Fahring representing Ward Three and Sean McCoy representing Longmont at large will be up for election. As of Tuesday, no candidates have yet filed affidavits to run, according to Longmont City Clerk Dawn Quintana.
She added that she doesn’t expect to see candidate filings until later this summer. Interested parties can learn more about the process on the city website.
Mayoral terms are two years in Longmont, while councilmembers are four years in length. Peck has been mayor for almost two years, after serving on council for six years. Waters was elected by special election to his ward in 2018, winning reelection in 2019.
Hidalgo-Fahring won her seat in 2019. McCoy was most recently elected last November to fill the council seat that had been abdicated by Peck when she was elected mayor in 2021 against Waters.
To run for Longmont City Council, a candidate must be a citizen of the United States, be 21 or older, be a qualified elector for at least a year, have resided in Longmont for one-year immediately preceding the election date and reside within the ward applying for, if elected for a ward seat.
Eligible candidates interested in running for election must file a candidate affidavit within 10 days of publicly announcing their candidacy. A candidate orientation session is scheduled for 6 p.m. June 29 in the Longmont City Council study session room at 350 Kimbark St.
Nomination petitions will circulate in August.
