Longmont Leader received the following Letter to the Editor from Engaged Latino Parents Advancing Student Outcomes in regards to recent events:
ELPASO: una organización anti-racista comprometida a la voz de los padres latinos
Nos sentimos llamados a la acción al observar la fuerza y la pasión de las personas que marchan con pancartas, expresando su frustración e indignación hacia el maltrato interminable de personas de color por parte de la policía.
Comenzamos expresando apoyo a la comunidad afroamericana. Pedimos a los departamentos de policía, comisarios y a los funcionarios electos a quienes informan, en todo nuestro país, que den un paso atrás, reflexionen sobre sus comportamientos y temores, y se responsabilicen de todas y cada una de las acciones racistas. Pueden hacerlo mejor.
Nuestra organización, Padres Latinos Comprometidos al Mejoramiento Educativo Estudiantiles (ELPASO), es una organización sin fines de lucro dirigida por latinos y con personal latino con una junta de gobierno multo-racial y multa-étnica. Nos desafiamos a nosotros mismos y a nuestros vecinos del condado de Boulder a pensar en cada uno de nuestros papeles para perpetuar los sistemas y estructuras que han llevado a estas protestas. George Floyd fue la chispa, pero el aluvión constante de agresiones diarias que enfrentan las personas de color en nuestra comunidad y en todo el país es el barril de pólvora.
Nuestro personal y los líderes de padres latinos que apoyamos tienen miedo por sus hijos. Están enojados. Están furiosos por la injusticia que ven y el racismo que experimentan contra ellos. Cada uno de ellos tiene historias personales vinculadas a este dolor.
Estamos brindando a nuestros padres líderes el espacio, el tiempo y la oportunidad de hablar, reconocer sus sentimientos y expresar sus pensamientos. Estamos comprometidos a apoyarlos con las estrategias y técnicas necesarias para tener estas conversaciones difíciles con sus hijos.
Estamos comprometidos a colaborar y escuchar, a elevar todas las voces de nuestra comunidad, no simplemente a la dominante, a profundizar nuestra comprensión de las acciones e ideales anti-racistas como organización. Este tipo de trato a las personas que no son blancas es racista. Nosotros, como organización, estamos comprometidos a ser anti-racistas. Esto es lo que enseñaremos y mostraremos a nuestra comunidad.

We feel called to action as we observe the strength and passion of the people marching with signs, expressing their frustration and indignation toward the never-ending mistreatment of people of color by police.
We begin by expressing support for the African American community. We ask that police and sheriff’s departments and the elected officials to whom they report, across our country, take a step back, reflect upon their behaviors and fears, and take responsibility for any and all racist actions. They can do better.
Our organization, Engaged Latino Parents Advancing Student Outcomes (ELPASO), is a Latino-run, Latino-staffed nonprofit with a multi-racial and multi-ethnic governing board. We challenge ourselves and our neighbors across Boulder County to think about each of our roles in perpetuating the systems and structures that have led to these protests. George Floyd was the spark, but the constant barrage of daily aggressions people of color face in our community and across this country is the powder keg.
Our staff and the Latino parent leaders we support are afraid for their children. They are mad. They are furious about the injustice they see and the racism they experience against them. Every one of them has personal stories tied to this pain.
We are providing our parent leaders the space, time and opportunity to speak up, to recognize their feelings, and to express their thoughts. We are committed to supporting them with the strategies and techniques necessary to have these hard conversations with their kids.
We are committed to collaboration and listening, to elevating all voices in our community - not simply the dominant one, to deepening our understanding of anti-racist actions and ideals as an organization. This kind of treatment of people that are non-white is racist. We as an organization are committed to stand as anti-racist. This is what we will teach and hold our community to.
