Longmont's City Council is supporting the goal of Longmont's power company reaching a 100% renewable energy profile by 2030. Brian Bagley, Longmont's new mayor, made a personal commitment and read the proclamation at Tuesday night's city council meeting.

According to the proclamation, "Platte River Power Authority has successfully tripled its renewable energy generation over the last three years and plans to add significantly more sources of renewable, carbon-free energy within the next few years to continue diversifying its energy-generation portfolio.”

The proclamation continues to say that "the need for reliable and affordable energy to attract and retain local businesses and spur economic development is vital to our community’s success in a highly competitive and increasingly global marketplace” and that "minimizing our community’s impact on the environment is a goal for which our community should continuously strive.”

While the proclamation states that Mayor Bagley does "commit to working in collaboration with the Board of Directors of Platte River Power Authority and Longmont Power & Communications," there is no language in the proclamation that requires nor forces the 100% renewable energy goal to actually be fulfilled.

FYI: Whether or not Longmont achieves the goal of having a 100% clean and renewable electricity supply is another story, however, this is how change begins.
