City Manager Harold Dominguez advised that people vying for a COVID-19 vaccination should sign up for appointments with all the providers currently listed on the Boulder County website.

The website lists 10 providers along with information from each on how to enroll for a vaccine. “Sign up at all of them,” Dominguez told city council members Tuesday night.

Dominguez was responding to a question from Councilmember Marcia Martin on the best way to ensure access to a vaccine once they become available. “What’s the best way to approach this?” Martin asked. “Should you sign up for any portal you can reach?”

Dominguez said that a scattershot approach is the best way — for now — to ensure residents get a shot. “The reality is you don’t know who is going to get a vaccine and where,” he said. Health officials are working to get a “common platform” for a vaccine sign up, he said.

Plans are being drawn up to get as many vaccines as possible to residents when the medication becomes more widely available, Dominguez said. Officials will likely look at large sites with high ceilings and lots of ventilation for mass vaccinations, he said, with the Boulder County Fairgrounds a probable location.

High school gyms also are viable locations. Mobile clinics are being eyed to get the medication close to people’s homes and work sites, Dominguez said.

Volunteers will also be needed to help with the vaccinations, he said.

Councilmember Susie Hidalgo-Fahring, a St. Vrain Valley School District teacher, said local classrooms are being hit hard by the virus and pleaded with vaccine makers to get the medication to all frontline workers as quickly as they can.

“Whoever is out there listening, the vaccine god, we need to start ... we need to get the vaccine to ... people. It’s been insane.”
