Longmont will get help in paying as much as $945,350 in past due utility bills owed by residents who fell behind because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The city has started its own program to address past due accounts including those that have not been paid for more than 37 days. But the $945,350 owed is beyond the program’s budget, according to a city staff report.

The City Council voted unanimously to accept help from Boulder County Housing and Human Services. The agency is using up to $12 million in U.S.Treasury Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) funding to pay past-due utility bills caused by COVID-19 in the county, the staff report states.

“These funds will ensure that utility billing customers can bring their accounts up-to-date and can re-establish a path forward on their accounts,” the staff report states.
