The Longmont Public Library and Longmont Museum have started saving more of Longmont’s oldest newspapers through modern digital technology.

A grant from the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection, or CHNC, New Content Support Program will cover the cost of newspaper digitization for up to $4,502 — the amount Longmont requested, according to an email from the CHNC.

Working with the CHNC staff, the grant has helped fund digitization of some microfilm and paper holdings to make the newspapers available to researchers everywhere if they have access to the internet, no library card needed, according to a city of Longmont news release.

The newspapers and dates added due to the grant are:

  • The Longmont Call, 1908-1918
  • Daily Times, 1918

Newspapers that are already part of CHPC are:

  • The Longmont Press: Oct. 2, 1872-July 22, (1872, 1874, 1881, 1882)
  • Longmont Times: June 23, 1888 - June 23, 1888
  • The Daily Times: Dec. 30, 1896 - Dec. 31, 1927 (1896, 1925, 1926, 1927)
  • Longmont Ledger: Jan. 15, 1897 - Sept. 14, 1923

“This is part of the Longmont Library’s commitment to providing digital access to local and national news,” the news release states. In addition to the Longmont newspapers available on CHNC, Longmont Library card-holders can access Longmont Times-Call articles on NewsBank from 2004 to the present, according to the news release.

The Longmont Library also offers access to digital versions of The New York Times (both historical articles from the 1850s to 1920s and current articles), the Washington Post (including podcasts, videos and articles). Consumer Reports, and hundreds of current magazines via the Library app, the news release states.
