Longmont Mayor Joan Peck will not run for reelection this November.
Peck has served as the mayor of Longmont since 2021. Prior to that, she was an at-large representative on the Longmont City Council. She is currently finishing her second two-year term as mayor.
“It’s time for a younger generation to take over,” Peck said. “I’m proud of my service and what we’ve done.”
During her time in office, Peck helped establish the City Council Code of Ethics, which applies to members of the city council and quasi-judicial city boards.
The code outlines four categories of conduct including barring local government officials from disclosing or using confidential information obtained in the course of their official duties to further their own personal or financial interests. It also set up a formal way for citizens to initiate complaints against local government officials and the process for handling such complaints.
“The code of ethics… really set a standard of ‘this is the way we’re going to work,’” Peck said.
Peck was particularly complimentary of the city council’s collaborative work on issues such as affordable housing, childcare, the environment, and transportation during her time as mayor.
“We work as a team with [city] staff rather than against staff,” Peck said. “I have total respect for everybody on that council and it’s time for someone else to take the reins.”
Although Peck won’t run for reelection as mayor, she will continue her work as secretary on the Front Range Passenger Rail District’s Board of Directors.
The Front Range Passenger Rail District is a government agency with the mission of bringing a new passenger rail system along the Front Range.
“It has become an all-encompassing job, which I find very interesting,” Peck said about her work for the agency. “I think it is the one thing that I have not accomplished that I want to put my efforts toward full time.”
The city’s mayoral election is scheduled for November 4. So far, at least two candidates — Shakeel Dalal and Longmont Mayor Pro Tem Susie Hidalgo-Fahring — have announced their candidacies for mayor.
