Longmont Meals on Wheels will restart its Monday through Friday schedule of meal deliveries on Sept. 13. The non-profit went to a Monday, Wednesday and Friday meal delivery schedule in November with no kitchen or building volunteers.
Meals on Wheels is making a gradual comeback and needs at least 30 volunteers to fully return, Katie Wiser, development and communications director, said via email.
“We have wanted to take things very slowly since we serve an older population and people with disabilities,” Wiser said. “Additionally, many of our volunteers are older themselves. Many of our volunteers took a break for their own wellbeing and have begun coming back now.”
“We also anticipate we will need a month to recruit all the volunteers we need.”
Meals on Wheels serves as many as 450 people on any given day, Wiser said, and about 1,050 over the course of a year.
“And we do about 440 meals per day because some of our clients get meals for the evenings as well,” she said.
Kitchen volunteers are already on a five-day schedule, according to a Meals On Wheels email to volunteers. Drivers who have driven for Meals on Wheels before and want to keep their old route, should contact Meghan Altland at meghan@lmow by Aug. 13.
