Longmont misses beloved elk

"Spirit Elk," as Glen Schultz referred to her, has not been seen in several months.

"Spirit Elk" spends a lazy day grazing at Glen Schultz's farm.

For years, drivers traveling into or out of Longmont via Hwy. 287 have been able to look to a nearby farm to see the single elk cow, which was lovingly named Spirit Elk. The elk has since moved away from the farm.

The property at the intersection of Hwy. 287 and Oxford Road belonged to Glen Schultz, who practiced regenerative farming on the land.

According to a family friend, Schultz died earlier this year and his family was unable to tend to the oxen who seemed to befriend the elk. After the oxen were sold, the elk left the property and has not been seen again, the friend stated.

The elk's whereabouts is currently unknown.

Boulder County wildlife biologist Dave Hoerath told the Times-Call that it is possible that the elk headed toward the mountains.

The elk’s presence on the small farm is missed by many Longmont residents who have stopped by to see her and the other animals over the years. We all hope she found a good place to settle.
