Dia de los Muertos: Day of the Dead

This year, the city of Longmont is hosting the annual Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, celebration on Saturday, October 9.

On Saturday, an exhibition in the Museum’s Swan Atrium will open, featuring altars - o ofrendas - built by members of the Longmont community as well as the work of local artist, Mario Olvera. This exhibition is free to enter and will be available for public viewing through November 7. At 2 p.m. on Saturday, the Firehouse Art Center will also present a new exhibit “Lazarus,” bringing together artists addressing “immigration and American identity from a variety of perspectives, media and methods.”

A Día de los Muertos Family Fiesta event will be held at 4th Avenue and Main Street in Downtown Longmont from 2 to 6 p.m. This “street festival” will include music and dance performances, arts and craft activities, cultural education, delicious food, downtown business altars and the Gigantes Procession from 6 to 6:30 p.m.

“After more than a year of challenges and loss, Longmont Museum’s annual exhibition and programs will bring the community together to honor the memories of those we have loved and lost and celebrate together in person again. Attracting more than 6,000 people annually, it’s the longest standing Day of the Dead exhibition and celebration in Colorado. Community participation is an essential part of this holiday full of life, reflection, food, family, and fun. The programs demonstrate how our diverse community comes together to share a common experience—honoring our ancestors and keeping their memories alive.”
