City Council Tuesday night decided to move its debate over a slate of proposed gun ordinances until June 2023.

The delay was proposed by Councilor Marcia Martin who said the Colorado Legislature is expected to take up gun control measures during its regular 2023 session.

“I think it would be more sensible for Longmont to discuss proposed regulations after we see what the general assembly does rather than do it in the next couple of months,” Martin said.

The results from several lawsuits filed against some Boulder County communities over their own proposed gun ordinances may also become apparent by next year, she said.

Only Mayor Joan Peck — who proposed the ordinances in October — voted against postponing the council’s discussion.

The proposed ordinances are:

  • Banning open and concealed guns in sensitive areas. This would add preschools, daycare centers, playgrounds and toddler swimming pools to a list of sensitive areas in the city where weapons are banned.
  • Raising the minimum age to 21 to purchase a handgun in Longmont.
  • Requiring a 10-day waiting period to receive a gun purchased in Longmont.
  • Banning the sale of unregistered “ghost guns” in Longmont.
  • Requiring signage in local gun shops warning that unlocked storage of firearms would be a danger to children.
