January 9, 2018— The City of Longmont has been awarded a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to fully fund sediment removal and erosion repair along Left Hand Creek through Longmont. The overall project cost is approximately $886,700. Work is anticipated to begin the week of Jan. 15 and take approximately three months to complete.
The sediment, which was left behind after heavy spring runoff in 2015, is causing underpass blockages and reducing the creek’s capacity, which increases the risk of flooding during large storm events and future heavy runoff.
Approximately 30,000 cubic yards of sediment will be removed from multiple locations along Left Hand Creek between Hover Street to where the creek flows into St. Vrain Creek, northeast of Ken Pratt Boulevard. Eroded areas along the creek’s banks will also be repaired as part of this work, which will be completed by Colt & Steel Corp. of Broomfield.
The public can expect to encounter occasional Left Hand Greenway trail closures or detours during the project. Find up-to-date information at LongmontColorado.gov/trail-status.
