In the season of giving, around ten scouts organizations including Boy Scout, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts are participating in "Longmont's biggest community food drive," called the Turkey Turnout, states Scott Conlin, event organizer.

Other volunteers include the Union Ward and Left Hand Creek Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints.

The Turkey Turnout is an annual food drive held throughout Longmont. Residents are asked to leave a bag of donated food, winter clothing and unused bicycles on their doorsteps. The Scouts will stop by to collect the donations and deliver them to High Plains Bank, the OUR Center or Bicycle Longmont to be distributed to families in need.

To date, the event has brought in over 25,000 pounds of food and clothing and over 200 bikes through the generous donations of Longmont residents.

This year the program has set a goal of collecting over 5,000 pounds of food, winter clothes and toiletries. Additionally, they hope to gather more than 25 bikes for Bicycle Longmont's Kids Holiday Bike Program.

This year, Turkey Turnout is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 17. The guidelines for donation are as follow:

If a bag was left on your doorstep:

-  Please fill, and leave out for collection on Saturday morning, Nov. 17th.

If you didn’t receive a bag:

- Leave a bag out at your front door/porch Saturday morning, AND text or email us with your address.

The program will accept non-perishable food, frozen turkeys, toiletries, gently worn or new clothing (especially outerwear) and children's bikes with wheels up to 24".

Monetary donations are also accepted. Checks can be made out to the OUR Center or Bicycle Longmont's Kids' Holiday Bike Program.

“Each year we are a bit anxious that we can deliver contributions for the OUR Center and Bicycle Longmont,” says Conlin, “but every year the community shows us how generous it is, and floods us with more and more donations to help our neighbors.  It is truly amazing to see.”
