The city of Longmont will use over $70,000 in state funds to purchase 1,000 compost carts to boost resident participation in the local curbside composting program.
City council, Tuesday night, voted unanimously to use $70,022.56 from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to purchase the carts to help Longmont boost its composting customer participation rate from 21.8% to 25%, according to a city staff report.
The carts will be collected by Longmont’s renewable natural gas-powered collection fleet. Outreach and promotional efforts will also be offered to educate current and new users in “composting best practices to optimize the quality of compostable material,” the report states.
The 1,000 new cars will help the city meet peak spring/summer new customer demand, further diverting waste from the landfill. The new carts will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions from organic material and cut waiting time for available carts, the report states.
